On Wednesday afternoon, social media was flooded with videos and images of a damaged Bree Street in the Johannesburg CBD. The road had been severely damaged, with tar ripped up and several vehicles, including taxis which usually park along the busy public transport route, were damaged.

Official Notice

An official notice was sent to community police forum groups stating that an explosion had occurred, “possibly on the gas lines underground”. The public was requested to stay clear of the area to allow emergency services to attend to the scene. The communique promised to update as soon as more information is available.

Injuries

At the time of writing, it was not immediately clear whether there were any injuries.
