Born on March 22, 1972, Baby Cele – Maloka is a renowned South African actress hailing from Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal. With a career spanning from 1986 to the present, she has made significant contributions to the South African entertainment industry.

Personal Life

Baby Cele – Maloka is married to businessman Thabo Maloka since 2017. She is a proud mother of two children, one of whom is named Yolisa Cele.

Career Highlights

Baby Cele – Maloka first gained recognition for her portrayal of Kaltego Rathebe on the e.tv youth television soap opera, Backstage, a role she held for eight years. She then went on to play the role of Portia in the SABC 1 sitcom, My Perfect Family.

In 2011, she took on the role of Beauty in the mini-series Shreds & Dreams, which was based on the 2004 play by Clare Stopford. From 2012 to 2013, she portrayed the character of Slindile Dludlu in the Mzansi Magic telenovela, Inkaba. She also starred as Gasta Cele in the soap opera, Zabalaza. In 2016, she portrayed the character of Sibongile Nene on Isidingo.

She was also a cast member of the stage musical, Sarafina!, and performed in the stage play, Cards. In 2018, she joined the cast of the telenovela, Uzalo, where she portrays the character of Gabisile Mdletshe.

Baby Cele – Maloka’s exceptional acting skills have earned her several accolades and nominations. In 1996, she won the Vita Awards for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for The Game and the Africa Movie Academy Awards’ All Africa Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer for Jump the Gun.

In 2006, she was nominated for the SAFTA Golden Horn Award for Best Supporting Actress in a TV Soap for Backstage. She was also nominated for the Golden Horn Award for Best Actress in a TV Comedy for My Perfect Family in 2013 and 2014. In 2020, she was nominated for the Golden Horn Award for Best Actress for Uzalo.

Marriage & Divorce

Baby Cele’s personal life has also garnered attention. She was once married to businessman Thabo Maloka. They got married in 2017 and celebrated their union with a traditional wedding ceremony in her hometown of Umlazi, Durban, in 2019. Unfortunately, the marriage came to an end in 2020, marking Baby Cele’s third divorce.

Speaking about her divorce, Baby Cele explained that as a sangoma, her ancestors revealed to her through dreams and visions that she and her former husband were not spiritually aligned and, therefore, had to end the marriage.

Motherhood

Despite the challenges in her personal life, Baby Cele is blessed with two children.

In addition to her thriving acting career, Baby Cele is a sangoma. She accepted her ancestral calling in 2004. With over two decades dedicated to spiritual practices, she seamlessly balances her roles as an actress and a sangoma.
