Gmail is getting blue verified checkmarks like Twitter, should help spot impersonators

One of the primary challenges of communicating through digital means is the difficulty in verifying the identity of the person you are conversing with. There are numerous individuals who may attempt to deceive you into divulging confidential information by pretending to be someone you trust.

This issue of impersonation has been present on social media platforms since their inception. To address this, many social media sites have implemented robust verification processes, particularly for organizations, public figures, and celebrities.

For example, when you see a blue checkmark next to the Twitter handle of South Africa’s Tech Blog, it indicates that you are communicating with the official account of South Africa’s Tech Blog. Similar verification badges can be found on other platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and even WhatsApp.

While verification processes have been implemented on many social media platforms, it is surprising that a similar system has not been widely available for email communication. Email is often used to send and receive sensitive information, including confidential messages to businesses and medical professionals.

It would be beneficial to have a verification system in place to ensure that the intended recipient is the one receiving the information. Gmail is now introducing such a feature.

Google is rolling out a blue tick verification feature for Gmail users who have verified themselves using the BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) feature. This feature requires senders to use strong authentication and verify their brand logo in order to display it as an avatar in emails.

Users will now see a checkmark icon for senders who have adopted the BIMI feature, helping them distinguish between legitimate messages and those from impersonators. Hovering over the blue checkmark next to a sender’s name will display a message stating that the sender has verified ownership of the domain and logo in the profile image.

This new feature is being rolled out across both Workspace and personal Google accounts. It should help reduce instances of fraudulent emails, such as those warned about by CBZ, even if it is not completely foolproof.
