South Africa, also known as Mzansi, mourns the loss of one of its most esteemed jazz musicians and songwriters, Thapelo Joseph Mofokeng. On Sunday, 21st January, the music industry was hit with the sad news of his passing at the age of 74. Thapelo, a native of Orlando East, Soweto, was a celebrated figure in the music scene, particularly during the 1980s. His exceptional talent and dedication to his craft earned him a place in the hearts of many music lovers.

Iconic Jazz Singer has died

In the wake of his passing, the Mofokeng family released a statement confirming the unfortunate news. The statement read, “On behalf of the Mofokeng family, we would like to sadly announce the passing of the legendary artist Mr Thapelo Joseph Mofokeng on 21st January 2023. This is a difficult moment time for the family, and we are still processing everything.” The family, however, did not disclose the cause of his death, leaving many in suspense and speculation.

Remembering Thapelo’s Contributions

Thapelo’s contributions to the music industry were not limited to his performances and compositions. In 2013, he was featured in a film titled ‘Felix’ as Bro Joe, where he showcased his passion for music education by teaching children how to play the saxophone. This role highlighted his commitment to nurturing the next generation of musicians, further cementing his legacy in the music industry.
