Kabomo Vilakazi is a multi-talented South African artist, known for his work as an actor, singer, writer, poet, editor, musician, producer, and artist manager. He was born on the 27th of July, 1978, in the town of Benoni, Gauteng. He has gained recognition for his roles in various films and television serials such as Zabalaza, Sink, Seriously Single, and Smoke & Mirrors.

Early Life and Education

Born and raised in Benoni, a town situated to the east of Johannesburg, Kabomo Vilakazi attended Benoni High School. His passion for writing, poetry, and music was ignited at a young age. He later pursued journalism at the University of Johannesburg, further honing his writing skills. He began showcasing his talents by performing at various events and festivals.

Career Journey

Journalism and Editing

Kabomo Vilakazi embarked on his professional journey as a journalist and editor. He contributed to various magazines, including Y-Mag and Uncutt Magazine. He also wrote for True Love Magazine and scripted the popular Sepedi SABC1 drama series, Skeem Saam.

Musical Endeavors

As a musician, Kabomo Vilakazi made his debut with the single “Uzobuya” in 2012. This was followed by two albums, “All Things Grey” and “Sekusile”. He has collaborated with numerous artists, including Tshepo Tshola, Unathi, Aya, Kelly Khumalo, Thiwe, Nothende, Flabba, The Fridge, Flatoe, Pebbles, Zubz, Dineo Moeketsi, Sound&Experience, RB collective, and others. He has also opened for international artists like Louie Vega, Vikter Duplaix, Josh Milan, and Bilal, and shared stages with Questlove of the Roots, Kaos, Angelique Kidjo, K’naan, and Saul Williams.

Acting Career

Kabomo Vilakazi made his acting debut in 2013 as Herbert in the Mzansi Magic soap opera Zabalaza. He then starred in the Vuzu sitcom Check Coast in 2014. His acting portfolio includes appearances in numerous shows such as Rhythm City, Generations, Scandal!, Sober Companion, Soul City, Thola, Saints & Sinners, Umlilo, Captain Bozaa, and Tshisa. He has also acted in two films: Sink (2015) and Seriously Single (2020). Currently, he portrays the character Mthetho on Smoke & Mirrors.

Production and Direction

In addition to his other roles, Kabomo Vilakazi has worked as a producer and director on two feature films: Droplets and Melody. However, he faced criticism from the Droplets film crew for not compensating them.

Kabomo Vilakazi’s work in music and film has earned him several awards and nominations. Some of his accolades include:

  • South African Film and Television Award for Best Achievement in Scriptwriting – TV Soap/Telenovela for Zabalaza in 2015

  • South African Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actor for Sink in 2016
  • South African Music Award for Best Male Artist of the Year for Sekusile in 2017
  • South African Music Award for Best R&B/Soul/Reggae Album for Sekusile in 2017

Personal Life

Kabomo Vilakazi is married to Ntombi Ngcobo-Mzolo, a fellow singer and actress. They are blessed with a son named Lihle.
