Born in the hills of Eshowe, a town located in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province of South Africa, Mbuso Khoza’s roots have played a significant role in shaping his musical journey.

Education

Khoza is an alumnus of the University of Witwatersrand, where he pursued and obtained a Master’s degree in Arts Heritage.

Career

Khoza’s career in music is both diverse and illustrious. He started as a jazz musician and won the best jazz album at the SA Music Awards in 2013. However, in 2015, he transitioned from jazz to the Zulu indigenous music genre known as amahubo.

Throughout his career, Khoza has had the opportunity to work with many prominent and award-winning artists. On the international scene, he has collaborated with the Carlo Mombelli Quartet, Mike del Ferro, and Ivan Lins. Locally, he has worked with popular artists like Black Motion, Black Coffee, and King Sfiso.

Khoza’s debut single, named after his birthplace, Eshowe, is a testament to the challenges he has faced and overcome. His music, particularly the amahubo genre, is gaining international recognition. He has toured Europe, promoting a collaborative album with Switzerland trumpeter Matthias Spillmann. The album, titled Ivovo, is a fusion of jazz and amahubo. The tour commenced in Lucerne, Switzerland. His music has been influenced by artists like Salif Keita and Richard Bona.

Apart from music, Khoza is deeply knowledgeable about cultural heritage and promotes it through various channels. He is the founder of The Afrikan Heritage Ensemble, established in 2016. He also serves as a columnist for the Isolezwe Newspaper, works as a radio presenter for Ukhozi FM, and lectures at a university.

Khoza’s talents extend to acting as well. He currently appears in the third season of the Mzansi Magic drama series Umkhokha, a show centered around two rival families vying for control of a church.

Health

In December 2021, Khoza was reportedly rushed to the hospital following an asthma attack, which was triggered by the environment in which he was working. His Covid-19 tests, however, returned negative results.

Accident

On 26 May 2022, Khoza was reportedly involved in an accident in Durban while traveling from a guest house to shoot an episode of Umkhokha. Two cars collided with his vehicle. Khoza believes the accident was not a random hit but a targeted attack. He escaped the incident without serious injuries but sustained bruises on his shoulder.
