Early Life and Background
Born in Verede in the North West of South Africa, Serai Tshepo Seate’s journey to becoming the renowned Stoan Seate is a story of passion, talent, and determination.
The Transformation from Tshepo Seate to Stoan
The name “Stoan” has its roots in his rap career. During this phase of his life, he was known by the moniker “Stoan Kold-T”. This name eventually evolved and became the “Stoan Seate” we know today.

Musical Journey: Bongo Maffin and Solo Career
Stoan initially moved to Johannesburg to pursue studies in Advertising. However, his passion for music soon took precedence, and his exceptional skills were quickly recognized. Instead of embarking on a solo career, Stoan decided to collaborate with Oscar Mdlongwa to form a group. This decision was partly influenced by the fact that, at that time, Boom Shaka was the only other Kwaito group in the industry. Jahseed and Speedy joined them, and together they formed Bongo Maffin in 1996, releasing their first album. Shortly after, Thandiswa Mazwai also joined the all-male band, adding a new dynamic to their music.
Acting Career and Television Appearances
Stoan’s talents are not limited to music. He received an invitation to audition for the role of Pule, a teacher in the SABC1 youth drama series Soul Buddyz. His previous television appearances include a brief stint on Molofish, hosting Castle Loud from 2001 to 2003, and Lillizela, a music game show, in 2004. On September 16th, 2008, he took over as the host of the SABC2 music show Afro Café, succeeding Pepsi Pokane. From December 2009 to January 2010, he served as the narrator for the SABC1 documentary series Vuma – A Music Revolution, which focused on kwaito music. In 2013, he made an appearance as a guest presenter at the 6th annual Crown Gospel Music Awards.
