Thobani Nzuza is a versatile artist who has made his mark in various fields of the arts. He has showcased his talent in numerous television series, including eHostela and Isitha: The Enemy. Apart from acting, Nzuza is also a playwright, director, vocalist, and dancer. His stage productions have earned him several awards.

Early Life and Education

Born on May 4, 1993, in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Nzuza was raised by a single mother alongside his six sisters. He was the only son in the family. His educational journey began at King Shaka High School, where he completed his matriculation in 2011. Following this, he pursued a bachelor’s degree in drama at the Durban University of Technology, graduating in 2016.

Journey in the Arts

Nzuza’s artistic journey began in 2010 when he joined the Community Arts Center. Under the guidance of Buhle ‘Bo’ Mlazi, he studied drama. His acting debut came in 2014 with the stage play Silencing the Hurricanes, produced by Themi Venturas. The play was performed in Bangkok and received positive reviews. Nzuza later wrote and directed the stage play Shintsha Guluva for the Isigcawu Festival, earning him the Best Director award.

In 2015, Nzuza performed in the stage play Secret Valley of the Great Kings, produced by Menzi Mkhwane. His role in the play led to a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Durban Mercury Theatre Awards. He also collaborated with Kagiso Tsimakwane to write and direct his first one-man show, Boy Ntulikazi, which garnered many accolades.

Accolades and Achievements

Nzuza’s talent and hard work have earned him several awards. He won the Best Actor Award at the 2015 Isigcawu Festival, the 2017 Baxter Zabalaza Theatre Festival, and the South African Theatre Magazine Awards. His play also won the Best Production Award at the 2017 Baxter Zabalaza Theatre Festival and the Best Community Production Award at the South African Theatre Magazine Awards.

In 2016, Nzuza represented the Shakespeare festival in Germany with the play Much Ado About Nothing, directed by Debbie Lutge. In 2018, he landed his first television role as Mdeni in the Mzansi Magic drama series eHostela. He currently plays the role of Chuma on Isitha The Enemy. In 2022, Nzuza won a South Africa Film and Television Award in the Best Actor in a TV Drama category.

Other Artistic Pursuits

Apart from acting, Nzuza is also a vocalist and a dancer. He has performed at various musical events and festivals, including the Essence Festival, the Durban Jazz Festival, and the Ugu Jazz Festival. He is also a member of the Afro-pop group 047, which is signed under Muthaland Entertainment.

Personal Life

Nzuza prefers to keep his personal life private. He is a devout Christian and often shares his faith on his social media platforms. He has a toddler who resides with his mother in Durban.
