Vuyo Biyela Biography
Born on 22 April 1995, Vuyo Biyela hails from Umlazi, a township in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. As an only child, he shared a close bond with his mother. His passion for acting was ignited at a young age. By the time he was eight, Biyela knew that acting was his calling. His childhood was filled with acting out scenes from his favorite movies, such as “The Karate Kid”, alongside his late cousin, who was like a brother to him. His acting journey began in his local church, where he also joined the choir.
Education and Early Career
Vuyo Biyela pursued his passion for drama academically, graduating from the Durban University of Technology in 2020. He was a popular figure during his high school years at Wentworth Secondary School. Despite his love for acting, Biyela initially aspired to a career in soccer, but this plan was derailed due to expulsion.
Breakthrough and Success in Acting
Two years post-graduation, Biyela received a call that would change his life. A producer from “The River” had reached out to him for an audition, thanks to a friend’s recommendation. Although Biyela had appeared in several series, it was his role as Mlilo Hlophe in “The River” that marked his big break. His character met a dramatic end after a 10-month run on the show, dying in a hail of bullets fired by Lindiwe Dlamini-Dikana.
Accolades and Recognition
Biyela’s portrayal of Mlilo Hlophe earned him widespread recognition and several awards. He won the Best Newcomer Actor award at the Simons Abela Awards and the Viewer’s Choice Best Actor: Outstanding Newcomer at the Royalty Soapie Awards in 2023. He also bagged the Best Supporting Actor at the 2019 Dut Drama Awards. His talent also led him to play Mark Antony, aka Antoniyase, in a play titled “uSiza”, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar”.

Biyela’s acting career continued to flourish as he took on various roles in different productions. He appeared in the 2021 film “Salamina”, acting alongside actress Mbalenhle Mavimbela. Most recently, Biyela starred as Kwenzo Dlamini, a young designer, in the Mzansi Wethu telenovela “Sibongile & The Dlaminis”.
